Among these were rules to institute curbs on lobbying and a pay freeze for senior White House staff. The president and his wife opened the White House to members of the public, finding time to greet visitors in the Blue Room. Hours earlier, children from the primary school that Mr Obama attended in Jakarta, Indonesia, in the 1960s, sang in a ceremony to mark his inauguration.
